This is a weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

Also, this week, a huge thanks to Gimpyfish for his awesome help and support of this week's installment of World of Smash, including answering questions, clarifying points, and reviewing this week's issue before release. Remember to check out his latest video, Boozer Cute.

This week's character is B o w s e r, King Koopa

Tier position: 6th of Low

Character Aerodynamic: Heavy Floater

Character Background:
While not Mario's first nemesis, he is the most notorious, kidnapping Princess Toadstool numerous times and attempting to take over the Mushroom Kingdom on numerous occasions. Debutting in the classic Super Mario Brothers, he eventually became more of a thorn in the Mushroom Kingdom's side more than an actual threat as time went on. Eventually, Bowser got tired of losing all the time and decided to try to win in other ways. In the 90's, Bowser entered the the first official "Super Mario Kart" circuit and did pretty well, coming back in every circuit since. But his competetive career in the Mushroom Kingdom didn't stop with kart racing. In the late 90's, he also entered the first Mushroom Kingdom Golf and Tennis tournaments.
After the turn of the millenium, the latest tournament to decide the ultimate fighter in the Nintendo universe was to be held and the being named Bowser Koopa was quick to jump on the opportunity to enter. Of course, before he joined, he probably should have realized that if he routinely gets trounced by Mario, how well is he going to do against all of Nintendo's best?

Character history:
Right from the beginning, Bowser was highly regarded as the worst character in the game. He was slow and he was laggy, not to mention unmaneuverable. How was one supposed to use this character?
But what happens when the large majority of people say a character sucks? Well, the people who love the character strike back! Bowser probably had one of, if not THE, most dedicated fanbase in the history of the game. If it wasn't for the dedicated fanbase, he would still be considered the most terrible character in the game and possibly even considered completely worthless. It's hardly been an easy battle though.
As told by Decadent One in his FAQ on gamefaqs, when he first started to try and learn more about Bowser, people would just tell him "it's not possible to be good with him" or tell him to "go play Sheik". Needless to say, this was not the response he wanted and eventually he had to work on it himself. Eventually, it got to the point where people were asking him about Bowser and eventually, it all culminated into the FAQ he created for Bowser, now displayed on gamefaqs. This ushered in a "new generation" of Bowser users and was a momentus moment in Bowser history.
Also in the old days of Smash was the Bowser player GrabfestBowser, better known simply as Luke. While maybe not exhibiting the best technical skill ever, he did have amazing mindgames and showed the world that Bowser was not a pushover. He is often regarded as the pioneer of Bowser playing and helped both raise his tier position and also change the perception of Bowser as a whole. He was the first to get top placement with Bowser at tournaments.
For a while, Bowser kept going along in this way. The period of time of 2004 and early 2005 really became sort of a transition between "old school Bowser" and "new school Bowser". Although the old school of Bowser playing was still largely played, a style which emphasised more power, mindgames, and little in tech, this started to change with the advent of Koopacolypse, a video by Arash showing Bowser at his best (at the time). It put Bowser back into the spotlight, introduced Bowser to a new group of players, was highly acclaimed, and skyrocketted both Bowser's and Arash's popularity; in fact, he is still one of the most well known low-tier players in the Smash community, both due to the video and high tournament placings. However, it also marked the end of the "old way" of thinking with Bowser.
After Koopocalypse's release, a new way of playing Bowser was emerging, getting Bowser to do things that was before thought impossible or not worth the effort. The new movement was spearheaded by both old and new players, among them players like Arash, Caotic, and MagnuM, and especially the new player on the Bowser street, Gimpyfish. They discovered even more about Bowser, including new uses for moves and new ways to play. While fortresshogging wasn't anything new (Decadent One had known about Timed Fortresshogging back in 2003), fortresshogging became really developed as Gimpyfish and MagnuM raced to discover the new ways to do this, resulting in a whimsical rivalry between the two. In very recent activity, Gimpyfish has especially had a big role in detering the still remaining prejudice against players that look at the tier list and automatically think Bowser sucks to the point of worthlessness, with posting on the smashboards, discovery of new techniques (including fortresshogging techniques and proof that it IS possible to combo with Bowser), several videos, and through his essay on Bowser entitled "Bowser Isn't As Bad As You Think".
To this day, many n00bies who place too much importance on the tier list still bring a lot of hate toward Bowser. However, the perception of Bowser by the community as a whole has changed quite a bit. Today, he sits at a not-all-that-comfortable-but-still-quite-a-bit-better position on the tier list to reflect this and also by the fact that people don't take Bowser as lightly as they used to. It all couldn't have been possible without the dedicated fanbase he has had and still has today.

Character description: The Ultimate Juxtaposition
Talk about mish mash of stats and traits thrown together. First, let me get some misconceptions cleared away first. First of all, Bowser is not slow. He is laggy. There is a huge difference. Many of his moves come out fast and his running speed is actually pretty fast. The problem comes when you try to do stuff like wavedance. Many of his moves also have lag time afterwards, which gives the false impression that he's an overall slow character. Secondly, his range isn't crap. It's deceiving because his range is small for his size, which is actually one of the most interesting juxtaposition, as you often don't see this kind of combination in fighting games. Third, he has an odd aerodynamic of being a "heavy floater". Although he isn't the only one with an odd aerodynamic (after all, Kirby is a light fast faller), this does make it so that Bowser is comboed really easily.
Another problem is that he is so big that his shield much of the time doesn't cover his whole body, which is made worse by the fact that many of his other purely defensive maneuvers are worthless. It not only makes it hard to powershield but it makes him easier to hit. The good thing is, he is heavy, so he can crouch cancel better and he doesn't go flying until much higher (MUCH higher) percentages.
One of the biggest problems Bowser has is the aformentioned "lag" in his moves. It is said that if he just had little less lag, he would be much higher on the tier list. Also, although not completely worthless, his grabbing game is somewhat lacking. In fact, in all but the PAL version of the game, Game and Watch takes no damage from Bowser's down throw. Dodging can actually make life worse for you and in addition, certain other aspects that are core to SSBM, like wavedashing, are really not well played out on Bowser.
All that being said, he is strong (really strong), he is decently fast (some of his moves come out surprisingly quick, especially the fortress), and he has one of, if not, the best edgeguards in the game. Where his defensive game is lacking, he has a surprising number of options in his offensive game. It really is not wise to underestimate him, because he might end up biting your head off. And tossing you behind him. Something I might note you DON'T want happening to you.

Mastering Difficulty: Easy
Bowser is not the most technical character in the game, by any means. Sure, you have to know when to use what, but for the most part, his moves are pretty striaghtforward and easy to learn how to use. His overall movement makes it easier to time hits. Some of his stats may be decieving (like his range and speed) but if you're responsible, you should be reading up on that stuff anyway.

Combo Ability: Poor
One word can sum up this category: lag. He may have decent speed and decent range but the lag he retains after his moves is really the thing that makes it hard to combo. Of course, it's possible to do but he doesn't exactly have the best ability of the characters in the game.

Recoverablilty: Poor
It's not the worst but it's a far cry from the best recovery. It may have pretty good horizontal recovery but the vertical distance is, to say the least, lacking. He is highly suseptable to spikes and other such edgeguards (although not as much as Donkey Kong is, due to the speed, trajectory and the hitboxes of his recovery), not to mention that he's big, making him easier to hit. The distance covered also isn't anything to write home about.
However, he does have a very nice from-the-ledge game. His ledgeattack is one of the best in the game (enough to make it even a viable offensive move), he's got a bunch of ledgehop attacks, and it is generally a great place for him to be, unlike many other characters.

Kill Factor: Chuck Norris
One thing should be really obvious right off the bat: Bowser is really strong. He tends to get kills at lower percentages and his edgeguard is one of the best in the game; in fact, he probably has THE BEST ledgeguard in the game (edgeguarding that involve being on or around the actual ledge). He just has a plethora of options in this regard. Not only that, but he is able to get on stage kills as well, from the Koopa Klaw Bthrow to one of the smash attacks, certain ariels and sometimes even with the fortress.

Key tactics:
Edgeguarding. He has one of the best in the game. Ftilt, Fsmash, Dtilt, fortresshog, fair, bair... he has many, many options here. And it doesn't only have to be when he's on the edge either. Watch some of Gimpyfish's videos and you'll see him chasing after opponents off the ledge and hitting with a fair before coming back.
Lag cancelling is also very important. One of Bowser's biggest problems is the lag he retains after many of his moves. Being able to work around it is very important for him.
Offense: You can't very well play defensively with Bowser. His sheild grabbing is slow, his dodging often places him in a worse position than he was before, and he's an easy target. Instead of worrying about "getting away", how about "getting back"?
Also, remember that Bowser has a great strength advantage. He can kill at lower percentages and he does a lot of damage, Peach being one of the only characters who can do more damage with a single move (at least of the ones you can actually LAND).
Mind. Games. If you think you can wow people away with your amazing Bowser tech skill, think again. Although you may have an advantage at first on some people who don't have much experience against Bowser, people will adapt. And unless you can keep up at their level, you're toast.
The fortress: This is one of Bowser's best moves and every Bowser should learn how to use it. Quick, lag cancellable (depending on situation/level), and very good range (initial range out reaches Link's initial B+Up). Actually, it even rivals Fox's reflector in the area of speed. It can be used both offensively and to get you out of a pickle.

Character Masters:
Captain Jack - The real question is, what character does this guy NOT play? He is probably the best Bowser in the world, although he has had little to no impact on the actual development of Bowser and the community.
Caotic - aka "Mr. KO". Originally an Aussie, he came to California and also became a moderator of SWF. He has a great love for Bowser and is one of the better Bowser players in the community. He is also responsible for the "Boozer" phenomenon.
Decadent One - Although he jump started the Bowser love, he no longer takes competetive smash very seriously anymore and has moved on to other games. As noted before, he was the first to take Bowser seriously and wrote an excellent FAQ. While it is now somewhat outdated, but some of it still applies and is still a great tool for beginners.
grabfestbowser - He is somewhat better known as "Luke". During the old school days, he held the title of "the best Bowser in the world" and put Bowser on the map, even if he didn't have the best technical game (listen to the comments in some of his videos). There is also a misconception that he has quit playing altogether (made obvious by comments like "if he still played Bowser, he'd be the best in the world" on the hub), which is false, although he is less visible now.
Arash - He is probably the most well known Bowser player. He has placed high (near or in the top 10 in some MLG events) and released one of the most popular low-tier videos, Koopacolypse. He has been around for a while but he is one of the players who have really ushured in the "new school" of Bowser playing.
Gimpyfish - He released his first combo video of his Mario after only 10 days of playing in mid-to-late 2005, already having mastered many of the techniques. Three videos later, Gimpyfish stands as one of the best Bowser players in the nation, having help spearhead the "new school" of Bowser playing, especially with the video Mushroom Kingdom Killer, the first place where Fortresshogging was really seen as a viable tactic. Most recently, he has released "Boozer Cute", the most technical Bowser video released yet.
Magnum - One of, if not THE most, dedicated Bowser player outside of the US, he especially helped develope Bowser's Fortresshogging game, along side Gimpyfish.

To learn more:
If you go to SSB:M at Gamefaqs.com, there is an FAQ created by the Decadent One from a few years ago. It is a little outdated but it is an excellent beginners guide to Bowser. More recently, Gimpyfish made a Pseudo-FAQ on Bowser and he plans to make a full out Bowser FAQ in the future. MagnuM's Fortresshogging video is also a definite recommendation for any serious Bowser player. As with other characters (and moreso with Bowser since he has a very active community), I suggest going to the Bowser board at smashboards.com.
Gimpyfish's Tips, in response to "What do you think is the best way to learn how to play Bowser?":
Gimpyfish62 posted:
Playing Bowser is the only way, playing him AND loving him, otherwise you’re wasting your time. Bowser is talked of as being a ‘low maintenance’ character, although I find that only half true. Bowser is incredibly easy to play as far as at a technical level goes, at least compared to most characters in the game. He is almost 100% mindgames and tricks, never ever ever play a computer with Bowser, I CANNOT stress that enough. It WILL make you worse.

Notes:
Holy cow. It's quite amazing what happened for this one. I sent a PM to GIMPYFISH, asking if it would be okay if I ask a few questions about a couple of Bowser players and he said he would be happy to help about Bowser in general. It was probably a bit presumptuous of me to then send him 17+ questions for answering but Gimpyfish was a very good sport and answered all of them and then volunteered to review this week's feature. I'd just like to take this time and say Gimpyfish is awesome.

Of course, with anything that is "publicated" (I use that term loosly because it's the internet), there are things I needed to cut. I actually like some of the answers I couldn't really use so I put a "deleted questions" section at the end of my notes. Enjoy.

Also, I'm getting a lot more busy with RL and I'm actually thinking about putting more effort into these features, much like what happened with Bowser. Both of them combined, these features may not be able to come out every week like I want (much like how I missed last week). Until school is over, I'm thinking of making this Biweekly. After finals, I'll revert back to 1 per week for sure, maybe even doing more than 1 per week (or not, lol).

Anyway, that's Bowser. I hope you really like it. This is really the first installment where I can tell people to STFU because Gimpy is reviewing it grin . But of course, I won't say that happy . I'd love to answer any questions and address any concerns you have.

Before we get to voting, DELETED QUESTIONS:

How would you describe the recent events with Bowser? Obviously, you've had a big hand in the more recent history of Bowser and how would you describe it overall, including anything that Caotic, Magnum or Arash have done? Also, whatever happened to the flame cancel?

Well flame cancel is still used when available, so don’t put that behind you. I would like to comment, however, on the major major reduction of firebreath from most bowsers, its become a slightly ignored move, favoring the klaw and the fair as general approaches, but I still use fire breath, even more so than I used to. Firebreath is a fantastic approach to remind who your playing that spot dodging doesn’t always work. Recent events with Bowser though… well I’ve been pumping out videos I suppose, most recently boozer cute, which I think represents the top level Bowser as best is as is possible, with not only some nice Bowser tricks (such as the ledgehopped uair, falling fair, and rising fair off the ledge, as well as the bair from the ledge and klaw techchasing, some of that refers to the directors cut video) but also some actual Bowser COMBOS which have been thought of to be impossible. The edge cancelled fortress ‘discovery’ that I made was probably the biggest Bowser discovery of late, as it really opened up the door for some combos and good escape tactics with mindgames. The up b “instant” edgehog is also important, but that’s pretty much an extension of edge canceling a fortress. I think lately Bowser has gotten a little bit more respect lately, perhaps more than he deserves. Me and a few others from WA went up to OR recently and I got 2nd in the tourney (tang 15) using 95% Bowser, only losing to one of the players I traveled with in tourney. Another recent thing that has come up is that as the general skill level of most players has improved, so has the (near) impossibility of winning anything with Bowser, making him seem worse, as the general skill level has improved dramatically.

Is Bowser a Falco counter on Yoshi's Story?

Bowser isn’t really a falco counter anywhere, nor a fox counter, nor does he counter anyone else (almost). Bowser on YOSHI’S STORY however can seem like a ‘counter’ to many characters, he kills most everyone at about 70% off the top or on the sides, he has the instant edgehog that owns a lot of characters, as well as a getup attack that covers nearly half of the level. I counter nearly everyone on yoshi’s in tourney, unless its some kind of crazy ganon player, or a marth, but normally if its Bowser vs. either one of those, he’s going to lose anyways, as they both counter Bowser pretty hard.

Anyway, that's it for this week. According to your votes, you guys really want Pikachu so I'll do that for next time. Here's the voting update.

I played shiek TWICE at tang 15 against OR people, vs nate we were pretty much playing around, he definitely should have beaten me, bowser or non-bowser, so i mixed it up.

Nate is the player from washington who took me out of winners, then beat me in teh finals to win the tourney, just to clerify.

I'm voting for Pichu next, it needs one for the people who glance at it and say "pichu sucks".

Again, thanks everybody! And remember, a huge thanks goes to Gimpyfish for his hand in this. Remember to check out Gimpyfish's "Boozer Cute" video!

Oh, nubs, I've already done Mewtwo already (it's week 2).

Delbuster: Well, I kept the edgeguarding open ended. He has a LOT of options so I just put an ellipse at the end of that.
THAT being said, the flame is not that great of an edgeguard. It will wear away, it gives the enemy their 3rd jump back anyway, etc. Although it can be useful, there are usually much better alternatives (such as dtilting, fairing, bairing, fortresshogging, etc).

Voting Update:
Samus, 6: Hockey_rules18, flyingthrough, DarkHedgehog, crazyjbob, kirbyguy2, Emunator
Ice Climbers, 6: Pikminshallruleoverall, supermarioworld128, _wwwtf, sappyhamster, shutupnavi, Nintendo113
Marth, 3: Sylvester, BionicSonic, Jugglyguy
Ganondorf, 3: Taku, krossbow, v4p
Fox, 3: Ultimate_Cartman, budakai, Syko_Lemming
Game&Watch, 2: Unanimous_Prime, Oaks
Luigi, 2: Cloudless-Sky, legendariesarecheap
Pichu <=3: RPGLover, MrNintendo617, _glook
Roy, 1: CloudACMaster
Lol I was wondering if anybody would notice that. Unfortunatly, I can no longer put <3 in the number spot since there are technically 3 people. Even though I don't really count as a vote anyway
