Date Posted: 4/23 5:54pm Subject: World of Smash: Week #9
This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

This week's character is Z e l d a . & . S h e i k, Master of Deception

Tier position: N/A

Character Aerodynamic: Moderate Fast Faller or Extremely Floaty

Character history: *(note 1)
Sure, at the beginning, it was sort of a given that you switched between Sheik and Zelda. I mean, that's what the developers intended and besides that, that's what the CPU did and it sounds cool at any rate, just to have two characters in your grasp. As time went on, however, it soon became apparent to many that they simply preferred one character to the other and dedicated their time more to one. Beside that, it was obvious from the get go that Sheik was good and it didn't take long (especially at TG2), for people to realize her potential, taking away the need to even revert to Zelda at all. As time went on, however, this perception started to change. Zelda's recovery was always known to be longer reaching than Sheik's (it's actually quite obvious, even to the n00b) but many became afraid of using it because it left them in the form of Zelda. In Japan, however, some Sheiks, specifically Captain Jack, were learning how to use Zelda so as to be able to be able to take advantage of Zelda's longer recovery when the time came. Also, now that the game is reletively old, people are trying out new things and using both characters in conjunction has become increasingly more popular.

Character description: Gameshifter
This is the only character who can be both a fast faller and a floaty. Zelda can also waver between weak and fast and slow and strong. On paper, it sounds excellent, which is probably why it sounded so appealing to the developement team. Used in the right way, it still can be, despite Sheik being able to make up for her shortcomings. There is a delay during transformation but if done right, through planning, mindgames, or any other method, the player can truly mess up with the opponent by switching up the entire game in an instant (read: in however long it takes to transform). And it doesn't strictly have to be where Sheik is used to do damage and Zelda used to kill; get creative. Experience is key here as well; find your own way to use both.

Mastering Difficulty: Somewhat difficult
Well, first of all, you have to learn Zelda, which is not that easy, on top of learning Sheik. After you have both of them down, then you have to learn the ropes of when to use which when, and without a real effective standard way of doing so, this can prove to be a little tough.

Combo Ability: Good
The potential for combos is still huge. Arguably, the combo game gets to be a little disadvantaged due to Zelda's form and the fear that one may be stuck in it (due to not being able to get a chance to change). However, this shouldn't be too big of a deal since when you change to Zelda in the first place, you're not looking for combos anyway and normally you will be Sheik when you want those combos. Although you obviously won't have the "all the combos all the time" that you have when you're just Sheik, due to the nature of character swapping, it doesn't end up being that huge of a deal.

Recoverablilty: Good
Alone, their recoveries either aren't that great. Combined, their recovering ability jumps. Zelda provides the lightness in the air so she doesn't fall so fast (meaning more air) in addition to her long range and Sheik provides the quickness in addition to the hard-to-edgeguard recovery, as well as some of her nice ledgerecovery tactics. It can even be seen in a few players tactics ways of switching more than once, say switching to Zelda to get the air then switching back to Sheik to grab the ledge. She simply has many more options this way.

Kill Factor: Chuck Norris
More characters means more ways to kill people, even more than just with Zelda alone. While Zelda has more of the hard hits, Sheik also has some nice edgeguards and her fair can be utterly devistating against many characters.

Key tactics:
The first thing to do is to learn both of the characters before trying to use them in conjunction.
Know both of their strengths and weaknesses very well. Know when which character will be most useful for you. Don't always stick to the "Sheik for damage, Zelda for kills" strategy since sometimes the roles can be swapped.
Learn from experience. Play people (real people, not CPUs) and see what works and what doesn't.

Character Masters:
Ryoko Yaksa - He's pretty much the only well known smasher that uses ZeldaSheik and helps moderate the smashboards. Using situation and his wits, he is not afraid to transform in the middle of the battle to give himself the upper hand, giving him the advantage of two movesets.
Captain Jack - Although he only does so when he absolutely needs to, he has learned to use Zelda effectively to be able to (reletively) safely make use of her recovery distance.

Videos:
Single Vids: (DC++ Setup)
Some of these are effective matches, some of them are just there for a gist of how people sometimes play both.
Ryoko(zelda)vs.Joker(samus)
Ryoko(zelda)vs.Ninja(fox)
4 CJ (Sheik) vs Dave (Dr Mario) Corneria
[KOTC] Mew2king(Fox) vs Wes(Zelda-Shiek)
EK (Marth) vs Cpt Jack (Sheik) 2
EK (Marth) vs Cpt Jack (Sheik) 4

To learn more:
Go back and read the last two weeks in World of Smash to learn specific character things. Watch the videos to get inspiration and ideas. Play and build your own style. And as always, discuss with others at the Zelda/Sheik message boards.

Notes:
1) This blurb is a combination of both real data and personal experience, as well as guesses. They may be "well-educated guesses" but they are still guesses. While I believe this is largely what actually happened, from what I've seen of the smash community and its history, I felt I owed the readers a warning that it may not be 100% accurate.

Notes:
All right, this one is finished. There really wasn't a lot of info to go off of so I had to wing most of it. I try to keep my own ideas out of things but due to the lack of info on this type of character play-style, I've put in my own ideas about how to play. I've tried to keep it open ended as possible while still being informative. I hope I've done a decent job at it.

Also, if you notice, there's the lip link tongue .

Now, to respond to comments from the previous thread:
First of all, thank you to everyone who is still supporting this series. I really appreciate your comments (even the occasional negative ones) and it makes doing this worthwhile.

Original_Ziogen, I've actually done a Kirby one. It's week 6 and the link is below in the back issues.

Juggleguy posted:
For Zelda/Sheik, are you allowed to use both character's moves at a tourney even if you signed up as one character or the other? Also if someone forgets to change into Sheik before the match, is it their fault or do they have the right to change if they forgot?
Well, in most tournies, you can counterpick characters so you never actually sign up as either of them. At all good tournies, you can switch between both characters. If you go to a tourney and they don't let you switch in mid battle, then leave, because that tourney sucks. In a crew battle, it may be a different story but I was recently in a discussion at smashboards about this and not allowing someone to switch in a crew battle is a very unpopular idea. I imagine you should be able to. At any rate, I know if you do it accidentally it's okay, judging on the reactions at FC3 East Coast vs West Coast when Doug accidentally switched to Zelda.

To the people who've voted, I've added in your votes. Next week's character is going to be Bowser.

Lol, actually Kirby can be a fast faller and floaty. He can't move when he's fast falling though...

@Juggleguy: Oops blush

@Hockey: Naw I found it on google image search. It was semi-tough to find anything I was looking for and I was about to settle for the pic from the opening AMV where Sheik is looking at the stars and Zelda's head is sort of spirit like in the sky. But this one did what I wanted better (to a T actually). The only problem is, it doesn't look professional but you win some and you lose some.

@Original_Ziogen: I guess Kirby is sort of like that but he's really more of a fast faller, as far as aerodynamic goes. I still regret putting "moderatly floaty" as his aerodynamic because if you play him he's not really all that floaty since he tends to be very effected by gravity and doesn't actually "float" at all, except for the forced floating he does when jumping.

Again, thanks everyone happy .

Correct. After all, he's a SMALL perilous pink ball. His weight may be little, but he has a high mass per square inch.

I think it was intended by the developers that Zelda and Shiek be used in conjunction. I don't use or fight Zelda/Shiek a lot, but I can imagine the constant tactic-changing required on both sides. Z/S has the edge, if the player has planned out an opening move or two immediatly following transformation.

Well, I mean, doing both Zelda and Sheik together is a little more complicated than simply "combining them together". There are tactical ideas that need to be addressed. But yeah, it is a bit less work than doing one completely on one's own since I had already done each character separately. Also, it relied more on my own experience since there isn't too much out there on using them in conjunction.

Thanks again everyone. I hope you don't mind if I let this be on the first page for more than 1 day ^^;;.

Excellent job on this issue _glook applause . I could always play Zelda and Sheik pretty good but for some reason could not play as both of them at once. I will have to try playing as both of them at the same time from now on. Anyhow good job _glook and keep up the good work. B.T.W I vote Ice Climbers for the next issue after Bowser.

Great job!

I was always kind of confused about the Zelda/Shiek issue in tournies, but it makes sense to allow switching. After all, the ability was programmed into the game, so why not allow it?

I'm not much of a Zelda or Shiek player, to start with. I really can't say what it is about them, but their fighting style just doesn't appeal to me at all.

At any rate, thanks a ton for the work you put into these things. Great job!

Oh, and count my next vote for Samus, please ^.^
