This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

This week's character is Z e l d a, Revered Royalty

Tier position: 6th of Mid Tier

Character Aerodynamic: Extremely Floaty

Character Background:
Every good epic story needs to have a damsel in distress [not necessarily true], usually a princess. The Zelda series delivers this in the form of Princess Zelda. Based off the character in The Ocarina of Time, this Zelda is fully adult and takes the patented magical abilities from the game and puts them to good use.

Character history:
The history of Zelda as a character isn't a very exciting one as Zelda has never really been very popular as a character in and of herself. She wasn't very big on combos and she's generally not as effective as Sheik, making her less viable for tournaments, not to mention harder to learn and use. Ultimatly, Zelda would simply be vastly overshadowed by her counterpart. This situation is still largely in place today, although she is slightly getting a little more attention, such as her recent appearance at the Socal vs Norcal crew battle at Champ Combo: Norcal Edition.

Character description: Light but Powerful
Zelda isn't exactly the most maneuverable character in the game and is actually quite slow. However, all of her moves are quite powerful, from her simple A move to her powerful fair/bair. So, you can't rely on damage dealing combos so much with this character as her powerful moves. Knockback knowledge is pretty important and you always have to be on the guard for retaliation.
As powerful as she is, he also has an affinity to be killed at low percentages as well. She's a light character, meaning "watch out".

Mastering Difficulty: Somewhat Difficult
Zelda is difficult to maneuver around; getting to the point where you can get her where you want her to be may take a little time. However, the biggest aspect that needs mastery is all of her moves. Every move has oddities that need to be worked out in order to fully utilize her.

Combo Ability: Poor
She hits strong, she has lag in several moves and she doesn't move that fast or is that agile. As a result, Zelda does not tend to be a very heavy comboer. Most of the attention should be drawn elsewhere to win the game.

Recoverablilty: Poor
Contrary to popular belief, Zelda probably doesn't have one of the greatest recoveries in the game. It has a bit of delay (during which you fall, potentially killing you on stages such as Yoshi's Story), the damage done during the delay has small range and isn't that useful, and goes in a directly straight line, stopping dead in its tracks at the first obstacle (with a few exceptions). It's rare to sweetspot the move and can often be punished quite severely either when she lands or in the air, since it can be somewhat predictable, depending on situation. She is floaty, allowing her a bit more leverage on the falling standpoint but she suffers from weak jumping ability and air maneuverability.
The high points, however, are the fact that it can be somewhat unpredictable and her recovering range is very big, in addition to her floaty status. She also has the nice ability to grab the ledge after an air dodge, which is quite nice, in addition to the infinite stall.

Kill Factor: Chuck Norris
Like all of the exceedingly femenine characters in Super Smash Brothers: Melee, Zelda has quite a bit of power behind her (which is an oddity in fighting games). Fair and bair are obvious killers to look out for. Her Fsmash can also be quite devistating, and her Dsmash and ftilt can do some damage at higher percentages as well. She also has a couple of spikes. Her dtilt, if delayed, is a meteor, and her dair is technically a spike, although not quite devistating (yet effective at higher percentages). And have you seen this girl throw? Due to her lack of air mobility, she doesn't quite have the edgeguarding game but she can mess up recoveries with Din's Fire, as well as other on stage tactics (depending on character). Overall, she is a very potent killer, which is probably what HAL meant for her to be anyway, complimenting her alternate character, Sheik.

Key tactics:
Know the timing, knockback, hits, sweetspots, and everything else of your moves. Although this can be tough to really get down, it is really the core to her playing style.
Remember, there are other ways to deal damage than with just combos. Like with really hard, damage-dealing hits.
You may sometimes want to switch it up by not sweetspotting with an ariel so you can do something else. This applies to other moves as well.
Her moves are strong, so crouch cancel counters may actually give you an advantage in some cases.
Many characters have wierd character specific things and Zelda has the infinite stall. You can see it in the video named coorespondingly.
And just because she's not good at comboing doesn't mean you should avoid connecting moves. Just to clear that up, in case you were actually thinking that. In fact, set ups can become important to her game.
Farore's Wind is not only a recovery move. Used on stage, it can be used to mess with opponents. Make sure you turn off your nametag though.
Above all, mindgames.

Character Masters:
GaWes - He goes by "Our Savior Marth" on the boards and although he tends to play Captain Falcon a lot, he can pull of some neat things with the Hyrulian Princess.
Kawn - Probably the best known Zelda player on the West Coast, he's a straight Zelda player, not switching to Sheik for anything. His talent with Zelda was so good that he was even selected to play on the Norcal team at the recent Norcal vs Socal crew battle at the tournament Champ Combo.
Mooplet - He released the first Zelda combo video. He also has been known to have a good Zelda. He also plays straight Zelda, with no switching at all.
Ryoko Yaksa - He is an admin at the smashboards. He also is well known for his Zelda playing skills. Contrary to what some may believe due to his name, he lives in America, not Japan.
Captain Jack - Although his main is Shiek, in the event that he needs to use his Zelda, he has trained up his Zelda so that he can use it as a tool in battle, allowing for him to switch to Zelda to take advantage of her recovery without too much fear of simply losing when back on stage.

Notes:
For some reason, I had a lot of trouble with this one. I don't really know why, I just had a hard time writing it all down. I think it has partly to do with the fact that she's not that popular. It seemed hard to get info on her until the last minute, which may or may not reflect.
Also, this is a lil' early since I promised two this week. This one will be today. The next one will be sometime soon. And that'll finish up the Zelda trilogy.

You still have a little bit of time to vote for the one after the next one.

Great job. I like how you pointed out that Zelda's recovery is not too good, contrary to popular belief. I personally find it very difficult to sweetspot, and I get punished when I land on the stage. I'm looking forward to your Sheik/Zelda edition. Also I'd like to change my vote to Marth.

Yeah, reflected by the sheer number of zelda vids... I managed to get. That were actually, you know, GOOD.

But I really like the Kawn ones. His Zelda is so sexy.

Duely noted Jugglyguy.

Thx to everyone happy .

Zelda's effectiveness is more apparent in 3 or 4 player matches from my experience since her moves have a good tendency to hit multiple characters. Zelda in 1 on 1 matches is definately tougher. It can be done but your timing has to be almost dead on. I like her more for kills if for whatever reason I have a character at a high percentage and can't get the kill with Shiek.

Actually, that reminds me of just now, when I was playing against a Falcon. I guess I could have gone for the kill with Sheik (after all, she does have fair and some other stuff) but for the percentage he had and considering he was recovering (and setting himself up nicely for a bair/fair from Zelda), I switched to Zelda just for that move. It's really nice having the ability to use two characters at once, at least for me.

Lol, I guess I'll stick up a link for Lip as well on the next one. I'll have to go find it in a bit.

Thanks again everyone. And at least it helped someone happy .
