Mewtwo
Date Posted: 2/18 12:45am Subject: World of Smash: Week #2 ~Mewtwo~
This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

This week's character is M e w t w o, The Fierce Feline

Tier position: 1st of Bottom

Character Aerodynamic: Extremely Floaty

Character Background: Back in the 90s, Nintendo released a small game on their handheld system, the Game Boy. It wasn't much; it was a simple game with basic objectives. However, the content of the game was a pop culture H-Bomb waiting to explode. The game became a worldwide sensation; everyone from the smallest child to the adult caught Pokéfever in Pokémon: Red and Blue versions.
When the game came out, the developers wanted a sort of dark and mutant creature to be there, firstly as a reward for beating the game and secondly, to convey the badness of the team that is Rocket. That creature was Mewtwo.
Not even being thought of in the original SSB because it was supposed to be reserved for the biggest Nintendo stars, he somehow managed to make it into the second SSB, probably because the developers were interested in what kind of a character he would make. Some fans were interested, too.

Character history: From his very first inception, Mewtwo was a thing that brought confusion. What kind of a character was he? How am I supposed to use him? What were the developers smoking? Not another pokémon!
Of course, to say that these were the only reactions would be silly. There were the people who fell in love with the character. There were people who thought he was cool for asthetic purposes. And then there were the gamers who saw his quirkyness and immediatly thought "POTENTIAL!" Even one of the top players in the game, Azen, experimented with him, looking for said potential.
Unfortunatly, it doesn't seem to have panned out for them very well.
He is one of the unconventional character designs in SSBM. This one, unfortunatly, didn't work out as planned. The developers were probably thinking that they'd make this really wierd character and give him quirky moves and the gamers would find ways to make him great. Nowadays, he is looked down upon as one of the failures in character design.
Fortunatly, SSBM is a reletively balanced game. Mewtwo is in no way unplayable and is actually quite fun to play for many people. Many Mewtwo players have given up hope in the current round but are hopeful that the developement team will work out the balancing issues in the next game, making Mewtwo a much better character.

Character description: Floaty and light
As stated, Mewtwo is one of the unconventional character designs in SSBM. Extremely floaty, he doesn't seem to move very quickly, especially if the player is a novice and cannot wavedash and L-Cancel. He is also light and can be KO'd at lesser percentages, a problem considering he is a big target. He also has an oddball projectile that wiggles around, which is a double edged sword. His movement is somewhat laggy as well.
Fortunatly for him, his moveset is reletively varied and his range is pretty good. With the right mindgames, one can even trap people in odd combos. His recovery is one of the best in the games as well. Like the character in his own games, Mewtwo is all about being psychic and mysterious.
For being a low tier, Mewtwo is seemingly without any real "useless" moves. All moves have their place. Unfortunatly, nothing he does is flat out stellar compared to some of the broken movesets of other characters. Of course, this is a relative term and Mewtwo is plenty capable of dishing out some serious punishment, especially in the hands of a capable player.

Mastering Difficulty: Easy
Mewtwo's movement and moveset, while odd, are not hard to understand once you get used to it and have "broken into" the character. While beginners may be thrown for a loop, it's not all that hard to figure out how to use his moves in even intermediate ways. The timing of his moves are not all that hard to get used to. A few tactics do require tricky timing but there isn't too much and nothing too bad.

Combo Ability: Good
He may not have the prowess that some other characters have, but Mewtwo can still string moves together pretty well, especially with throws, ariels, and whatever else is good at the time. His tail works wonders and he has several moves from sheild jump, as well as his throw game.

Recoverablilty: Excellent
His jumps alone cover both good vertical and horizontal distances. Add to the fact that he isn't exactly falling to his doom. But where he truly shines is with his teleport. Immune to all attacks except for Ganon's B+up (and possibly Falcon's) and covering a large distance, not to mention that it can be aimed in any direction, this move alone makes Mewtwo's recovery one of the best in the the game. However, one should not forget about the recoil from a shadowball and his Confusion attack for more arial maneuvering.

Kill Factor: Average
Mewtwo has his KO moves, like his throws, cat's claw, and meteor to do his dirty work. Although definitly not the worst killer in the game, he's definitly not the best. In edgeguarding, he has to watch out for priority and while on stage, he can usually only kill at higher percentages.

Key tactics:
Take advantage of his B+Up. It will teleport you from one place to the next, making you invulnerable during the path.
Although you may not at first think it's possible, Mewtwo can indeed string attacks together. Don't be afraid to try something new.
Although some of attacks may seem weak, they pack more of a punch than you think. Integrate them into your style and see where it takes you, especially the ones with longer range.
Mewtwo is all about his grabs. From KOing to comboing, Mewtwo needs his throws.
A SHFFL'd neutral A can work wonders. Actually, the nair just plain out rocks. Actually(x2), his whole ariel game is pretty good. Mewtwo players should probably learn to sheild jump to ariel as this is also a big part of his game.
Wavedashing is integral to his playstyle. Learn and love.
Mewtwo has a few tricks up his sleeve, including his dragdown, shadow rush, and shadowball that players should probably think about using.
If you think of something and think it might be useful, try it. Not everything is gold but maybe you'll find something that works.

Character Masters:
MookieRah - Someone who has been in the gaming scene for a while, he also believes in playing a low tier character even if it's not tournament worthy. A gifted smash player, he can still hold his own pretty well even while using Mewtwo, which apparently, according to him, is the only character he's good at. Is the current title holder for "best Mewtwo in the world."
UmbreonMow - Another excellent Smasher that is known for his Mewtwo. Has done well with him, especially in money matches. Although Mewtwo is not the only character he uses, he does show the character love. He used to be called the world's best Mewtwo until MookieRah beat him in a ditto at FC3, after which UmbreonMow gave the title over. MookieRah still holds the title currently.

To learn more:
Like every other character, the best character guides are found at the smashboards. MookieRah is currently working on one himself but for now, the best one out there is Nje789's Mewtwo Guide. Another great source of Mewtwo information is the Mewtwo Throw Guide, outlining key throwing tactics. For more general "extra" ideas, you can learn to M2 like a pro. You may also want to keep an eye out for Mookie's guide as well.
As with all of the characters, for more in-depth discussion about MewTwo, go to the character specific board for Mewtwo at the smashboards.

Notes:
Ah, so here it is, Mewtwo. Was sort of a pain in the ass to do, actually. The Mewtwo fanbase isn't really active (at least anymore) and I had to do this installment in a way that wouldn't piss anybody off, or at least minimize the amount people would be pissed off. At the same time, it shouldn't sound like an inspirational speech. Hopefully, this gets the job done.

Research wasn't too hard though and eventually I got what I needed. Actually, my Mewtwo improved quite drastically and it might actually be better than my Pichu and Game and Watch now. I also found that I like Mewtwo a bit more now than I did before. Odd since I never really liked him that much. As far as bottom tiers go, Yoshi and Pichu are my guys.

Again, this installment is early because I just want to get this out. Although it could become a pattern, don't expect it to be consistent. The planned schedule is still Saturday nights, although I may have to skip weeks due to real life (not the comic strip).

I love Mewtwo. He(along with Ice Climbers, Jigglypuff, Doc. Mario) has made it up to the last stage until Master Hand does his "walking" move and KO's them. I can't seem to dodge it sad .

My best tip that I could think of at the top of my head is to try to time your teleport just right so you go through him and end up at the other side of him so that he can't hit you after you reappear. There's also the option of double jumping and confusioning/teleporting over him as well.

Edit: or the old fasioned shield or dodge. Mewtwo has a really long dodge so it may actually be beneficial to him to do so, although I haven't tested it out yet in 1-player mode.

a wile back I started practicing with Mewtwo
there's a move I like a lot, but it's pretty dificult to do against more experienced players

it concists on wave-dashig behing your oponent, use his SmashB and wile the oponent is in air, you can charage your DownSmashA
it's a pretty cool move

Yeah, with more experienced players, they'll either DI or air recover out of the confusion. But against lesser opponents, it's pretty funny happy .

Yeah, Mewtwo's a mutated cat.

Thanks for the further compliments happy . I hope this is helpful for at least some people, especially newcomers. Mewtwo isn't actually all that bad as people like to think. He's currently my best "grotto of the tier list" character (although that may change as soon as I do the Pichu breakdown).

"Yeah, Mewtwo's a mutated cat. "

I dont believe so, I thought that Mewtwo was built off of the few remains of the legendary Pokemons DNA, Mew.

Edit: Awsome job on the char bio, BTW, as always...

Yeah, sorry about that Dillo. I knew that would piss you off and I was trying to reconsider it for a while. In the end though, I realized that I should try to make this as objective as possible and not worry what others would think. I actually noted that in my "Notes" section.

Secondly, these are all reletive. I have 5 difficulty ratings, ranging from Difficult to Easy. After doing my research after playing Mewtwo myself so I could experience firsthand the things I was writing about, Mewtwo as a whole didn't really feel all that intimidating to learn, at least when compared to everyone else.

I have a tentative list right now of each of my "ratings" systems, which includes Mastering difficulty. I would assume things will shift around a little as I learn more about each character but in the grand scheme of the game, if Mario is the easiest to master and Link is about moderate, Mewtwo's spot seems about right.

Also, I'm not trying to insult Mewtwo's character in any way. I think's he's great fun to play and takes too much heat for being bottom tier. And I'm not saying people who play Mewtwo are n00bs either. People who think that will be in for a rude awakening when they come up against Mookie or Umbreon. The rating is just to note the ease of getting to that "character mastery" level where you've got the character under your hand.

I can't say I wasn't anticipating this, not only from you but from others. Hopefully, it's understandable where I'm coming from though.

Edit: Also, that rating is purely on the technical aspect. As you well know, how you play the game and game skill goes far beyond technical skill.
However, being able to make the character do what you want first requires you to get a hold of the moves and know what the character can do. This is easier for Mewtwo than it is for other characters.

Maybe he isn't, I dunno. It's just that he looks like a cat (at least to me), his name is "Mew" which sounds very much like "Meow", he goes around saying, "Mew" almost like a cat. Also, Mewtwo's fair is commonly called the "cat's claw" so I just figured he was a cat. Actually, he has a thing called the CCC, or cat's claw counter that you can look up in in-depth FAQs (like the ones I listed in the last section happy ).

On a furthur note, sheild hopped attacks are so much fun, especially if you shield hop a cat's claw and it actually connects. That thing has more range than people give credit for, especially when you initially pull it off.

I also don't think Mewtwo is easy to master. His double jump alone makes it very hard to chain together combos. Quite unusual. That takes getting used to.

His double jump is pretty maneuverable though. I actually didn't have that great deal of trouble from his double jump. If you want a character who's double jump is annoying to control, it's probably Ness or Peach (or even Yoshi to a certain extent).

Overall, I don't really think he's that hard to control. It's a matter of switching your mindset over and it's pretty smooth sailing afterwards. Sure, when you first start playing the character, it's very awkward because he's moves so differently from everyone else. However, after playing him for a little while, it's not hard to get past. A lot of his combos and tactics are pretty straightforward and none of his moves require tons of practice to get the timing down right. It's nothing like trying to master the bombsoldier trick and I don't even consider Falco to be that hard of a character to master.
