This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

This week's character is K i r b y, Dreamland's Finest

Tier position: 4th of Low

Character Aerodynamic: Moderatly Floaty

Character Background:
Back in 1992, HAL was still an up and coming game development company, although it was a far cry from the 5 man in a cramped apartment it was a decade prior. They decided as a group that they needed some sort of franchise to really put them on the map.
So they got to work. The developement team, to make the process a little easier, put a placeholder "blob" sprite in place of what they actually had planned for their main character. The creator of the game, Masahiro Sakurai (who incidentally is also the creator of Super Smash Brothers), however, started to really like the little blob and in the end decided to keep him. This blob we know today as Kirby.
Later in the 90's when Sakurai and HAL were developing the original Smash on the N64, they couldn't very well make a "Nintendo All-Star" game without including their own Marshmellow Hero into the mix. And thus Kirby became part of the roster.

Character history:
Kirby was the king of Super Smash Brothers for the Nintendo 64. He ruled the game with his Z-cancelling madness and his crazy spikes and other such craziness.
Now he's regarded as one of the worst characters in Melee. What happened?
Well, there were some "broken" issues with Kirby in the N64 game. Much of that was taken care of with the new "L-cancelling" system that replaced the "all lag gone z-cancellling" system that was in place in the original and other gameplay changes. The developers went further to insure that they had properly fixed him. They went too far, of course. Instead of balancing the character, then ended up tipping the scale in the opposite direction.
However, dispite all of this, Kirby has still had opportunity in the tournament scene. One gifted smasher in particular, KrazyKirbyKid, took Kirby to the 9th place position at MOAST 3 in Texas in January 2005. Many had thought that he had quit playing smash since, but recently, he returned to the smashboards. This could mean the revival of Kirby in the smash scene.

Character description: Like a rubber ball
Kirby is really different from other characters. Kirby isn't really that maneuverable. For a puffball, you'd figure he'd have decent air movement but he's pretty unruly in the air. He isn't really that strong either. He isn't really much of anything. He's also hard to control. He also isn't that fast either. You just can't play him like you can with other characters.
The blurb in "The Competetive Kirby" under the heading "Fighting with Kirby - An Overview" is a very good description of the character. It's so good that I'm going to quote it rather than continue make an inferior version of it.

It is very important for someone unfamiliar with Kirby to learn quickly that you do not win fights with Kirby the same way you do with other characters. He is weak, so you can't go for out-right KOs like Marth; his attacks are slow so you can't hope to get mad combos like Sheik; and his movement, both on the ground and in the air, is slothy, which means you can't hope to make lightning-fast maneuvers like Fox. Because of these factors many people who are used to playing other characters will not have a clue when trying to use Kirby.

Kirby is best played in close combat, sticking with his opponent, not giving them room to properly distance themselves nor time to think. His excellent evasive abilities help him avoid attacks as he strikes both from the ground and in the air and "taps" his opponent off the ledge. From there, his victim must split their attention between Kirbys' attacks and attempting to recover back to solid ground, leaving little in the way of retaliation. While off the ledge, Kirby has the advantage with his ability to fearlessly engage in off-stage combat for a prolonged time; his multiple jumps allow for multiple attacks while he floats safely in the air. Depending on the situation, Kirby can go for KOs with Back-Air or Up-Air; or he can try to interrupt recovery attempts with Neutral-Air or Down-Air, netting KOs without need of power or speed.

Kirby should not rush head-on into the fight; rashly doing so against a skilled player will likely result in you quickly losing a stock. The same goes for overdoing it on the defensive. If you're too concerned with dodging attacks, then you will never get the hits in that you need, nor will you be able to capitalize on the small opportunities advanced players leave open for attack. You have to play Kirby smart. Your opponent must always be under the threat of attack, but Kirby mustn't attack until there is an opening.

Concentrate on utilizing your Tilts when on the ground. They can catch your opponent far more often than a Smash Attack and they will not leave you as open to counter attacks should you miss. They don't pack much of a punch, but the damage will build up on your opponent and you'll be able to use the knockback from your Tilts to push your opponent off the ledge where they're vulnerable.

Forward-Tilt is the one to use when your opponent has enough damage to knock them off the ledge. The speed and range of this attack can often land a hit before your opponent can react, or can interrupt their attack before it has a chance to reach you.
Down-Tilt has a greater reach than the F-Tilt but with less power. Since it is a crouching attack, Kirby will be hard to hit before, during, and after this attack.
Up-Tilt isn't likely to KO someone or push them off the stage by itself, but it easily leads to juggling and combos.

Aerials form an integral part of Kirby's fight. Mixing your offense with a variety of Tilts and Aerials will keep your opponent from effectively judging where to strike or how to defend. Keeping your opponent from predicting your attacks is part of any good fighter's game but it is even more valuable to Kirby who cannot afford to be hit.

Forward-Air can be used to rack up damage, and the third hit can knock your opponent horizontal.
Down-Air has a bit of start-up lag, but this attack works well when you want to go offensive and the Meteor Smash is an added bonus.
Back-Air is quick, strong, and effective in practically any situation. Especially deadly when intercepting a recovery attempt.
Up-Air is even stronger than the B-Air, but only especially useful when your opponent is above you.

The final, and most unique aspect of Kirby's fighting technique is that at any given time your opponent could set himself up for a sudden "Kirbycide" - that is, one of a number of attacks that results in both Kirby and his opponent Self-Destructing. There will be much cursing and gnashing of teeth when you do this, and the word "cheap" will inevitably come up more than once. But without this shockingly effective ability, Kirby would easily be rock-bottom on the Tier List.

Summary:
Kirby is light, but hard to hit because of his dodges, evasion and crouching.
Kirby is slow, but keeps his opponent guessing.
Kirby's primary attacks are tilts and aerials.
Kirby's main strategy is to build damage until the opponent goes off the ledge.
Kirby's KOing strength lies in Ledge Gaming, Edge Guarding, and Air Guarding.
Kirbycide 4TW!
Mastering Difficulty: Difficult
Not only is he hard to use, he's hard to learn. He has a lot of attacks that are situational, like the hammer. He's also a combination of weak, slow, and bad at maneuverability (especially in the air), which is hard to get around. The timing and position of some of his moves are also awkward, especially with certain sweetspots in some moves.

Combo Ability: Average
Unfortunatly, Kirby is not big on combos. It's not as bad as some other characters but he's not exactly 0-deathing anyone. However, he does have the ability to string moves together decently and it's surprising some of the combos he can pull off.

Recoverablilty: Good
Kirby doesn't have much air maneuverability so his recovery is somewhat easy to follow. However, there are several things Kirby can do. First of all, he doesn't absolutely need to jump after each jump ends so he can make it harder to follow (after all, he can always gain that height back later anyway. If you have enough leeway, fastfalling may work wonders as well. Fair can help with timing the recovery and it is thought to extend horizontal recovery distance as well. There's also the stone sweetspot, which can only be edgeguarded with grabs and swallows. The cutter is predictable but it is also fast and recovers a lot of vertical air. Oh, he also has about five jumps. Isn't that nice?

Kill Factor: Average
Kirby is not a very strong character. A few of his best moves have decent knockback. USmash and uair are good horizontal killers and are probably his best on stage moves. However, he does have quite a nice edgeguarding game. Tilts, metoers and projectiles can throw players off. On top of that, Kirby also has kirbycides, although they often end in death of both players, although sometimes Kirby can escape death with the swallowcide.

Key tactics:
Horizontal kills are important to Kirby. Mostly because that's what he is, a horizontal killer. Many ground attacks will kill that way, as well as some ariels (including uair, bair and the last hit of the fair).
Edgeguarding is one of Kirby's key points. He may not have the air maneuverability as some other characters but what he does have is multiple jumps, making him a danger to recovering players. Make use of the fact that he has multiple jumps and that you gain another jump each time you grab the ledge. Also, he has several ways to keep the opponent from getting back to the stage, including tilts, projectiles, and smashes.
Kirbycides (the term used for when you suicide with Kirby) should really be used only in dire situations or when you're ahead. For example, if you're at high damage and they aren't, it may be worth it. Remember, some kirbycides don't always have to kill you (like the swallow kirbycide against most characters). Also, remember that some throws can be broken out of at under 60% damage. Also, uthrow kirbycide will kill kirby first (remember this for last stock kirbycides).
Play smart. Don't rush in but don't hang back all the time. Study your opponent. Kirby does not have it easy so you have to be more in the game that most other characters have to be.

Character Masters:
Omnigamer - He's one of the moderators of the smashboards. Not only is he known because of his position, he has been known to be a "kirby guru", study kirby's game very extensively. Omnigamer plays a steady technical kirby.
King Kirby 90 - Not as well known yet still very impressive. His kirby is quite fast and actually is blinding if seen against the backdrop of other kirbies.
KrazyKirbyKid aka Richard aka KKK - One of the most successful kirbies to date, he placed 9th place moast3 in Jan 05 out of 120 people present. It was thought that he had quit playing because of lack of tournament activity, but he recently returned to the Kirby board at smashboards.com.

Ah! Finally, it's over! I mean, it's finished!

Again, sorry this was late. It partly had to do with life issues but the big thing didn't actually have to do with my personal problems but problems with the actual breakdown itself.

I started off with high hopes. I was starting to pick Kirby up and I was like, "Hey, this character's neat!"
As I got further and further, I got more and more frustrated. When looking for videos, it was hard finding a video where Kirby ISN'T getting owned. It got to the point where I almost gave up on looking for any had the nice people on the hub had not come to my rescue.

Kirby is not at all an easy character to play. He's nothing like the other characters so I had a tough time just getting "into" him. Not only that but I learned that he's very limited. He has a reletively large number of situational moves. His stats aren't very conducive to winning either and it feels like HAL built him in a way that doesn't mesh at all with the gameplay. I mean, sure Kirby was really good in the original game but you didn't need to make him completely suck, HAL. It may "feel" like balancing the game but it's actually just tilting the scale in the opposite direction.

Then there was the problem of splicing all of those opinions about Kirby. I mean, with most characters, there's the perception of the community and then there's the perception of the character users. Sometimes they correlate and sometimes they don't but at least that way, it's easy to decifer. For kirby, there's no clear cut opinion on the matter at all. It was sort of hard to figure this out objectively.

I didn't actually start feeling better about Kirby until I started watching some of the videos. After that, things started to fall into place better. Hopefully, it all worked out.

So yeah, that's my roundabout way of saying "I'm sorry it's late and I'm also sorry that it sucks". Hopefully, it's still decent enough to enjoy. So here it is! Enjoy (please)!

Anyway tongue I like how you outlined the difficult maneuvering in the air, and yes, I think Kirby's strategy should be to rack up damage until the enemy is near the edge.

id say that kirby is the worst character in the game. lack of power, speed, moves just copy other characters. lets face it he sucks. applause
