W . o . r . l . d . . . o . f . . . S . m . a . s . h

This is a weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

This week's character is F o x, Space Devil

T . i . e . r . . . P . o . s . i . t . i . o . n: 1st of Top Tier (SBR), 2nd of Top Tier (MBR)

C . h . a . r . a . c . t . e . r . . . A . e . r . o . d . y . n . a . m . i . c: Extreme Fast Faller

C . h . a . r . a . c . t . e . r . . . B . a . c . k . g . r . o . u . n . d:
When the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was released, it was known to be a powerful system. However, the power of the system could be furthur improved by the cartridges themselves. In 1993, Argonaut Software developed the Super FX 3D Accelrator chip, which was build right inside the cartridge. SNES games could now run games in 3D, using hundreds of polygons, an amazing feat for consoles back in the day. Eager to test this out, Argonaut teamed up with Nintendo to develop the first Star Fox game, a fully 3D game when such games were rare, especially for consoles, which furthur boosted its popularity.
The success of the first game caused the two developers to work on a second game. Starfox 2, for the SNES, was almost fully completed but never released. However, this was mostly due to the Nintendo 64's release and Nintendo had no intentions on letting the franchise die. The next (and what most fans consider the "last great") StarFox game was StarFox 64, which consisted of the same cast members of the original, including the renown Fox McCloud.
With this kind of attention, Fox was a shoe in for making the character roster of Super Smash Brothers, and he did, even though he had an apparent lack of on-ground fighting prowess. He did pretty well, considering he spends most of his fighting time in a ship; however, but he did manage to get outclassed by a kid with a yoyo, a rodent, and a ball of puff. Determined to not let it happen again, he trained for the next tournament and came back to take the Smash World by storm.

C . h . a . r . a . c . t . e . r . . . H . i . s . t . o . r . y:
Fox is currently in the highest tier position possible. It is even said by many that he is "potentially broken", and "impossible to master". He is a character that is seemingly unbeatable in the perfect players hands. However, it wasn't always like this.
Near the beginning of the game's lifetime, Fox was actually not that daunting of a character. After the players had figured out the timing of edgeguarding him, players feared that he was just too easy to kill. This was back before "shining" was used to a big extent; in fact, he relied much more on his other moves, especially his uair. It wasn't until later that Fox would be put in the spotlight.
Matt Deezie, the host of the old Tournament GO, which was the first National Smash Tournaments, is credited as the first to use the term "shine" and was the first who really put into use the shine as a edgeguarding technique. Later on down the road, the drillshine technique was discovered and opened the door for a huge variety of shine-related strategies/combos.
Early shine techniques culminated into a combo video, still one of the most well known combo videos for Melee, called "Shined Blined". It featured DBR Fox user Zelgadis, and not only is great for opening the eyes of smash nubs but also, at least at the time, showed many people what Fox was really made of (at least of those who hadn't experienced it firsthand). Already, people were thinking of Fox as a "perfect" character but videos such as SuperDoodleMan's videos of AR Fox really pushed this belief into the forfront of Melee thinking.
Nowadays, Fox is heavily dependant on shines and because of this move is regarded as the "perfect character, someone who should be unbeatable when played at maximum potential". Fox's game still is not really that close to his known maximum potential but he's getting there. For a while, many of Fox's techniques were thought to be impossible do to by humans but top players kept on consistently doing more and more, first the waveshine and then the shine JC'd grab and then the SheildShine. In early 2006, videos of prosmashertim jump cancel shining many times in a row brought another huge blow to the idea that Fox could not be mastered. Who knows what will happen next.

C . h . a . r . a . c . t . e . r . . . D . e . s . c . r . i . p . t . i . o . n: Broken
Fox has a lot of things going for him. He's got probably the best move in the entire game (the deflector aka the shine), speed, power, combo moves, etc. He also, however, falls fast (which is comboable and also means that stun time is longer) and has an reletively easy to intercept recovery. However, everything else he has fully makes up for it.
Being fast in smash is a big advantage and Fox has plenty of that, both in movement speed and in attack/action speed. Especially for characters with lag and lower movement speeds, like Ganondorf and Bowser, this can make the matchup VERY difficult (depending on level of course); so much so that some levels are banned on the basis of the one-sidedness of some of the matchups. His movement is also helped by the plethora of "movement tricks" he has up his sleeve.
Being so fast in both movement and action, it makes sense that he has a good combo ability. Indeed, many of his moves have little knockback, especially at lower percentages, yet coupled with little lag, it allows Fox to pull off many combos and rack up damage quickly. His lazer, while it doesn't stun, is a useful damage dealer as well. However, despite his combo ability he also has a few very strong killers, specifically upsmash and upair, which can be very devistating if sweetspotted; in fact, it can kill at moderatly high percentages on heavier characters and moderatly low percentages on lighter characters (and actually, it can kill at low percentages with very light characters). And of course, that still doesn't take into account the moves that BECOME killers at moderatly high to high percentages, like uptilt and fsmash.
He is also among the few who have infinites. This is made possible by his "shine" technique, which can be cancelled out of by jumping. This allows one to chain in moves afterwards. What's more, Fox can wavedash out of it and on many characters, this creates opportunities to "chase" after the opponent. Waveshining isn't the only way to chase after characters, but it is the most widely used. He also has several ariel combos and such, really making Fox a dangerous character.
His shine is also useful in many other instances. On the ground, it makes the character move a set distance (not incorperating the effects of Smash DI) so it is very useful no matter what percentage for comboing. It is also tied for the fastest move to come out (along with Jiggly's Rest). Fox is one of the very very small number characters who can't be shield grabbed because shining right after an l-cancelled ariel will not give the opponent any time to do anything. And even if a grab is not attempted, Fox can grab out of a shine or waveshine around the player (or potentially even jump cancel shine, a technique where Fox shines right after jumping out of a shine while still on the ground, causing Fox to shine on the ground again... and again and again...). This makes Fox's approach on of the best in the game. But he doesn't only have to play offensively; he can play effectively defensively as well with techskill combined with mindgames to take advanatage of your opponents mistakes or purposely manipulating them to make mistakes. Or you could play both and REALLY screw with your opponent.
In the air, his shine knocks the enemy down and horizontally. This allows for Fox to "shine spike", by shining someone off the edge so they cannot recover. The shine also has a bit of range and Fox is invulnerable for the first frame or so (while still being fast), making this an ideal defensive and offensive move.
The downsides of Fox come in the ability to be comboed easily because of his fast falling nature. This means that he not only stays near the ground longer but is also stunned longer after attacks, setting himself up for combos, especially against jugglers, like Falco and Pichu. He also has a predictable recovery that lacks priority (in addition to falling fast). However, his recovery is still moderatley long and there is still the option of mixing things up.

M . a . s . t . e . r . i . n . g . . . D . i . f . f . i . c . u . l . t . y: Difficult
No one has mastered Fox yet. Some believe it is not possible due to the extreme technical ability one must have. Not only does he need to be controlled fast, but he also needs to be controlled precisely in his timing, a combination that makes for a very hard to learn character. Not only that, but Fox can be played SUPER FAST with SUPER ACCURACY, as can be seen by such "AR techniques" such as jump cancelling (I named it "AR techniques" because they have only been really shown useful through AR videos, such as those by Superdoodleman). But even in the realm of current ability that people have been able to tap, Fox is still very hard to control/learn. At the beginning, people have trouble with dashing off the edge and accidentally using arials. Later on, it's trying to l-cancel his ariels into shines and jump cancelling grabs. Even later on, waveshining techniques and intercepting people with the shine (by shine spiking) becomes an issue and then there are lazer techniques. Because of the fact that not only is Fox fast and precise in how you need to use him but also because he utilizes almost all of the general techniques in the game so well, he is often deemed THE character to use to improve your technical game.

C . o . m . b . o . . . A . b . i . l . i . t . y: Spectacular
Fox is fast, nimble, has many movement tricks, and has moves that have somewhat small knockback while still have decent stun and little lag. Please tell me you can put 2 and 2 together. Combine this with the ability to shine and then wavedash out of it, a move that has set knockback (without DI) and add to that the several infinites he has...

R . e . c . o . v . e . r . a . b . i . l . i . t . y: Poor
While his recovery doesn't lack TOO much in distance, something that allows for him to have a little more leeway into how he recovers and gives him a FEW more options, it is still highly straightforward and lacks priority, enough for him to be easily edgeguarded, ESPECIALLY if he is coming from below the stage. The way both of his recovery attacks work also make it highly suseptable to intercept, one because it goes in a straight line and has no priority and one because it stalls him in the air for a long time. However, this doesn't leave him completely defenseless. He has room for changeup, such as sweetspotting the ledge with the Bup and going the shorter distance with his phantasm.

K . i . l . l . . . F . a . c . t . o . r: Chuck Norris
Both on the ground and in the air, Fox has incredibly strong kill moves that can knock the opponent in the air and off the top, the upsmash and the upair. For characters that either aren't as suseptable to upward attacks or otherwise, he can also knock people off with back and neutral ariels and with the shine. His smashes are also pretty good and his uptilt is a killer at higher percentages. The fact that he can kill floaties and light characters at extremely low percentages and everybody else with a shine spike at 0 percent says something about his killing ability.

K . e . y . . . T . a . c . t . i . c . s:
Having the best move in the game also means (in this case) that there is a lot you need to know to use it well. To save space, here's a link to a tutorial on the shine: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=67333
Fox also has a lot of movement tricks. Again to save space, here's a tutorial on those: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=60918
The lazer is good for getting a few percent in here and there (which can add up) and is good for goading the opponent but just sitting there spamming can be very dangerous. Learn techniques such as short hop lazers and double short hop lazers and work on timing and aiming lazers in general.
Oh geeze... I don't even know what to mention next. You know what I give up. Look at the "too learn more section". Now scram.

. C . h . a . r . a . c . t . e . r . . . M . a . s . t . e . r . s:
... Everyone - Who doesn't use fox? Isai, Ken, Azen, Mew2King... everyone does. The biggest reason is that he isn't really a "specifically tuned" character; his playstyle is pretty generic and also he is compatible with many playstyles. Add to that, Fox is known as a technical character so many people play him anyway to improve their technical game. Add to that he is easier to use than many characters in a tournament setting (Sheik may be [was] top tier but using her in battle is a bit more complicated for her than with Fox). However, there are some of those that specialize in Fox or at least are really well known for specifically their Foxes..
chillindude829 - He has become synonymous with Fox. When doing certain tactics with Fox, it has become known as "doing a chillin". Easy going, while still holding on to the whimsical trash talk, chillindude has pushed the envelope on Fox playing and will continue to do so.
Masashi - Now retired, he was basically the "chillin of the east" as far as effect, not playstyle wise. While not a very flashy Fox, he was a very precise and smart Fox. He has retired to pick up other pursuits (read: other fighting games).
Zelgadis - one of the most well known Foxes due to his highly flashy and shocking "Shined Blind" combo video. He's not considered one of the best Foxes in the world but his effect on the smash community was, and is still, huge.
Mew2King - An up and coming smasher from the East coast, he's living proof that you don't NEED competition to get really good. However, it requires quite a lot more self training ideas and dedication and time and nerdiness though happy .
KishSquared - Kooky Kish from the Midwest. He's one of the best Foxes in the Midwest and comes from the premere Midwest crew, the Ship of Fools, also known as the "Kishes".
CunningKitsune - Also one of the best Foxes in the midwest, he is also author to the most indepth and greatest Fox guide and possible the most indepth and greatest SMASH guides ever.
Doraki - He's from Europe but he also is known for his great contribution to the knowledge of DI. Watching a match will make you scratch your head at some of the wierd trajectories he takes.
And I'll stop there. I could probably go on forever.

You can pretty much find good Fox videos in many places. Some good places to look are youtube, google video, and the hub, searching for the names listed above or otherwise. I don't really think I need to give specific vids though.

The first place all future Foxes should go is to Omni's guide to Fox. It is a VERY good starting point. Then, start going through the guides listed in this thread. As always, go to the Fox Character Specific board at smashboards.com.

Notes:
NO! I haven't stopped these! Don't worry about that. However...

WOW! That was a lot to get done. Fox is too complicated/is too involved. Of course, that's only partly to blame. For a week, I was smashing almost all the time (a good thing for me, maybe not necessarily for you) and random life stuff cropped up. But it's out now. I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY!

But seriously, enjoy. I hope it's good enough. And sorry to Ultimate_Cartman that you had to wait so long ><. The votes just didn't line up.

As always, if your name is not listed below, you may vote for one of the characters listed. If your name IS listed but you want to change your vote, you may do so. Vote by PMing me or posting your vote in the thread. Next week... I mean next TIME'S issue will be Luigi. He pulled through by 1 vote (although he still would have been done in the event of a tie anyway).

Thanks for reading!

Nice work as usual, glook. I hate L-Cancelled aerials followed by shine madness when playing against Fox. I have to adjust by playing style completely. I'm glad you pointed out Fox's vulnerability in his recovery, especially below the stage where he can't sweetspot the edge.

Thanks again for your responces everyone happy . Yeah, it's not a coincidence he has the biggest and highest number of guides of any character.

Lol, a misplaced a lot of these names. Fortunatly, I know which names I misplaced. I think, for the most part.

@Jugglyguy: Oh man, no kidding. However, he is fun to play against, even though it's a hard matchup for my Link.

@Zorieon: lol thanks happy .

@Others: Heh, I know you hate Fox but I would still suggest learning him simply for the technical improvement. It's pretty useful, as I noted in the WoS.

Nice. I've never enjoyed using Fox/Falco as a character, but I've enjoyed fighting against people who use him. (Mainly with Captain Falcon. It's so much fun.)

I'll also vote for CF, but Peach has already won. tongue
