Date Posted: 3/19 10:54pm Subject: World of Smash: Week #5 ~Falco~
This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

This week's character is F a l c o, Death with Wings

Tier position: 2nd of Upper

Character Aerodynamic: Extreme Fast Faller

Character Background:
On November 21, 1990, a system called the Super Famicom was released to the Japanese public. Nine months later, the American version of the system was released as the Super Nintendo. The game system was heralded for its top of the line video game technology. One of the things it had was the breakthrough graphics system, Mode 7.
With Mode 7, developers could now simulate a 3-D environment better in a video game. One of the biggest titles to use it to date was a little title called Starfox. The game became so popular, it became its own franchise, spawning a canned sequel for the SNES, many actual sequels, including Starfox 64, and the inclusion of its main character in Super Smash Brothers for the Nintendo 64.
As the Gamecube version was in development, Fox McCloud was considerably altered, creating need for a clone character. That clone character was Falco Lombardi, second member of the Starfox team.

Character history:
The smash community just couldn't make up their minds about Falco. Was he awesome? Did he suck? What can you actually do with him?
Of all the characters in the game, Falco is said to be the most fluctuating character. When it looked like he was an awesome character, another fact would come along to ruin that. Then another thing would be discovered that put him back in the spotlight again. His potential was hard to discover dispite his popularity in the western United States, especially with things such as his dair being used on stage as opposed to strictly being used as a spike.
The indecisiveness of the community is understandable, however, due to the nature of the character. Falco has an incredibly strong offense yet he lacks any real defense at the same time. At one point, it was beleived that he simply couldn't take the punishment that resulted in the slightest mistakes; back then, as it is now, Falco could get caught in rediculous combos, sometimes almost reaching the triple digits in damage from one combo.
However, it seems now things have cooled off considerably. Falco's game is now much more fully developed and the community has a better understanding of where he stands.

Character description: Blitzkrieg
Falco is one of the most offensive characters in the game. Not only does he have good speed but he also has good priority, good power, and good maneuverability. Looking at each one of these stats separately, it's hard to see how any of those traits benefit him since they are not the best in the game. However, with all of them combined, it makes Falco a force to be reconned with.
However, Falco does have a glaring problem: his defense.
He's a fast faller. He's somewhat heavy. He also has a crap recovery. Combined together, it makes Falco one of the most punishable characters in the game. Falco may be able to dish out the pain, but if he makes a mistake, he won't be able to stand it.

Mastering Difficulty: Somewhat difficult
Everything about Falco, at least at first, is 'off'. His wavedash is hard to time, his speed, while decent, is not all that fast. His knockback is strong but not too much so. It'll take a while to optimize all of this to really fully grasp what he can do.
On top of that, he has a plethora of techniques that aren't necessarily too hard to pull of but they aren't exactly easy. Short Hop Lazer will take a while to get used to if you want to do anything with it if you're not just standing in place, like trying to hit a crouching target, going forward with it, or trying to go backwards with it. He also has several other lazer techniques to get under the belt. Not only that, but some of his moves have wierd knockback and range and some of them are hard to use optimally, like fair and uair (especially the uair), especially with the sweetspots. He also has several ledge game tactics that the player will have to get used to. On top of that, the player will have to learn shine techniques. Even after the player learns and perfects the techniques, they'll have to use all of it to form some sort of game. DI is also very annoying and Falco players will have to learn how to deal with potentially game ruining DI.

Combo Ability: Spectacular
If you're talking about a character with such a good offensive game as Falco, of course he's going to have an awesome combo game. Shine, lazer, ariel game, etc. He's got so much going for him and if the player knows what he or she is doing, he or she could seriously catch the opponent off guard.

Recoverablilty: Atrocious
After playing the character for even a little while, the crappiness of his recovery will become quite evident. He has nice jumps but that is mostly only vertical, plus much of the time, he won't have those jumps avaliable to him. His Firebird has very little distance and the time it takes to start up is really long, which just begs for punishment. His other recovery move, the Falco Phantasm, is also somewhat predictable, being saved only by the fact that it meteors. Add to this the fact that he is a fast faller. From the ledge, he has a few options, including his double lazer, fair and dair, Falco Phantasm, and walljumping but this mostly relies on mindgames.

Kill Factor: Good
Almost all of his moves have good knockback. His lazer, when used on a recovering enemy, makes them fall slightly, moreso when they're in the middle of a jump or a recovery move. His dtilt is a very good KO move and his FSmash and Dsmash can really do some damage near and away from the ledge, but it's really good as an edgeguarding technique. This is to say nothing about his dair spike which is devistating when pulled off, either at the ledge or from a rising jump either from a walljump or a regular jump. If it's worth anything, his Falco Phantasm can be used as a meteor as well, although it's hard to pull off. On certain characters, it may even be worth it to bair from the ledge on a recovering enemy.

Key tactics:
One of the biggest aspects of Falco's game is his lazer. Of this game, the biggest aspect is his Short Hop Lazer. Learn how to use it well, including knowing how to hit a crouching target, moving forward and moving backwards with it, and anything else you can think of. Remember that it can also disrupt potenetial recovery as well as rack up nice damage, due to its stun.
His ariel game is very nice. Although it's good to know how to SHFFL with all the characters, it's absolutely imperitive for Falco because of the offensive nature of his game and the nature of his ariels. Know how to SHFFL all of his ariels, including his uair.
Falco's deflector, while not as effective as Fox's, is still a very good move. It knocks enemies upward, allowing for follow-up moves and combos, which include all ariels or even another shine. How far up depends on percentage and this will have to be figured out by the player. Remember to jump cancel and learn the timing for it. Also, DI can mess with Falco players so remember to learn to follow DI after a shine. A useful tool with that is to follow on the ground, most likely with a waveshine.
Platforms are good to make use of, not only to help get out of combos or avoid fatal edgeguarding but also to aid in comboing and manuevering as well.

Character Masters:
Bombsoldier - Falco is most often connected with this name. A 15 year old smasher from Japan, he is now ranked among the top smashers in Japan period. His technical game is top notch and he makes an already fast character even faster. He is, however, criticised for his lack of mindgames by many in the smash community. However, his technical prowess cannot be overlooked, as well as his tournament standings.
Dave - Often overlooked, Dave is considered among top smashers to be one of the best Falcos ever. He has a mean style and is a very daunting opponent.
Dope - THE Falco of the Midwest. He often plays with Drephen and has a reputation of being among the best Falcos in the world.
PC Chris - Although he doesn't main anybody, PC Chris has a very nice Falco has shown the character much representation in tournements. If he had a main character, Falco would definitely have a high chance of being it.
Zanguzen - East Coast Falco, he's also very forward, not hesitant to attack at any given moment.
RobMoney aka RobFalco - Not only can he play Falco, he can also play Halo 2 pretty well. He's got all the Falco stuff in line and his technical game is very good.
JD - One of the best European Falcos and does well at tournaments.
MasterTK - He is also European. He has a nice Falco as well and does well at tournaments.
Lampchops - Along with Flowingwater, he's one of the Falcos representing the South. Lampchops does not seem to stop moving and once the battle starts, he seems to always dash dance or wavedash whenever there is some idle time.
FlowingWater - An awesome Falco from the South. He helped make "Aces and Eights" and he has a really nice Falco as well.

Notes:
Yes, it's late. I had a tournament to go to on Saturday. It rocked by the way. I played two of the members from DBR (predictably getting 3 and 4 stocked). It was great.

Also, there were too many vids to watch. This isn't even all of the ones I could have posted either. To be honest, I skimmed through them and if I even saw one thing that was interesting or helpful, I included it. Way to much stuff.

Yeah, and there were also way to many masters. Geeze this guy is popular. I actually didn't include several people because I just didn't want to deal with it. Some of the ones I included don't have that great of a description anyway.

Anyway, that was great. It was also sort of easy because Falco is my secondary so I already know a bit about him anyway. Enjoy.

For next week:
Kirby, at least 3 votes: Dark Hedgehog, Taku, Juggleguy, Unanimous_Prime(?)
Fox, 1: Ultimate_Cartman
Roy, 1: CloudACMaster
Ice Climbers, 1: Pikminshallruleoverall
Sheik (1), Zelda (0), Total (1): PandaMasterX4
Bowser, 1: Nubs222
Samus, 1: Hockey_rules18

Don't feel like you need to absolutely stick with your vote, you can change it if you want. However, it definitly looks like I'll be putting Kirby up this time. And Sheik and Zelda is going to be a 3 week series if it's chosen. So Zelda and Sheik will be combined together although, whoever gets the most character specific votes will get picked first.

Back issues:
World of Smash: Week #1 ~Link~
World of Smash: Week #2 ~Mewtwo~
World of Smash: Week #3 ~Doctor Mario~
World of Smash: Week #4 ~Jigglypuff~

I loved the character history you did. I was just thinking the same thing; Falco has a deadly SHL, but his recovery sucks. Falco's combo skills are insane, but he's vulnerable to chain grabs. Ups and downs. I thought your overview of Falco was excellent.

Other than that, I have nothing else to say except great job again.

"Mastering Difficulty: Somewhat difficult"

Wrong.

You know why? Because you don't just learn techniques with falco. You have to learn all his moves, then be able to do them at any time. Then you have to know exactly which ones to use based on the speed, range, power, recovery, direction, and projectile direction.

I guess it depends on your definition of difficult. Do you mean difficult for your hands to do? Even then it would still be high.

I realized all that. That's why he's not moderate difficulty, which what I put for both Link and Doctor Mario.

At the same time, he's definitly not at the difficulty level that Ness, Ice Climbers, and other such characters are at. Falco is definitly not as hard to master as Ness and Ice Climbers.

Also, I said this in another one but Mastering Difficulty =/= Difficulty of Usage, which is why my Mewtwo and Jigglypuff ratings seemed so against the grain. This is a forsight that I didn't include a "Ease of Use" rating as well before. I've been thinking of sort of including descriptions on how hard the character is to use in the Mastering Difficulty description for future installations.

A lot of things go into difficulty of mastering. This includes how hard it is for your hands to do. Stuff like waveshining and aiming Ness's PK Thunder (that recovery is a pain in the butt, I've even heard Simna say it takes 12 years to learn :P) are hard to do for your hands. Speed not so much since every character in the game benefits from speeds. And at the times speeds is more beneficial for certain characters than others, it's not really harder for you to learn for them (except for possibly Captain Falcon). Of course, there are a lot of other things that go into it, like learning how moves work, knowing what works, what doesn't, etc. But mostly, it's just learning the techniques and "getting the character down", which is a big part of why Falco is not higher up on the difficulty ranking (meaning easier to learn) than he already is.

All the stuff you said is in some way said in the blurb below the Mastering Difficulty rating. Falco's my secondary so I know what you're talking about, don't worry. It's just that he doesn't rank in that bottom difficulty ranking. That's reserved for the REALLY tuff to learn characters, like stated above.

i vote kirby. btw, i really like these things you're doing. they've helped me a lot more than long drawn out Character FAQs. they've made me a much better smash character. like with Jigglypuff, i used to really suck with her, since she'd always get knocked off so easily. but now i'm raking in the KOs with her.

shock Really? This stuff is helping that much? That's pretty cool happy . Although, if you want to get really good, I still suggest reading the stuff in the "to learn more" sections ^_^.

I'm glad this is helping! By the way, I'm already doing Kirby so that's set in stone, don't worry about that. However, you can still vote on future ones after Kirby if you so desire.

Kirby: *Confirmed*
Sheik (4), Zelda (1), Total (5): PandaMasterX4, flyingthrough, v4p, sylvester, chris
Bowser, 3: Nubs222, RKO_4_life, tmnt
Ice Climbers, 2: Pikminshallruleoverall, sm128
Pikachu, 2: ShadowHydra, Fluffy Pika
Fox, 1: Ultimate_Cartman
Roy, 1: CloudACMaster
Samus, 1: Hockey_rules18

I just read all of your “World of Smash” posts up to this point. Very good job happy . I can’t wait for the next issue. Oh and if I can I vote Zelda for a future issue (after Kirby that is) peace .
