This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.

But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?

That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.

It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).

If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.

This week's character is D o c t o r . M a r i o, Prescriber of Pain

Tier position: 2nd of High

Character Aerodynamic: Moderate

Character Background: Mario's alter ego, Doctor Mario, premiered in a little game called Doctor Mario, a puzzle game where you line up colored pills with viruses to get rid of them. The storyline is that the Mushroom Kingdom was stricken with a plague and Mario was needed to save the day. So, he pulled a Doctor's degree out of his rear end and went off with the trial and error medicine making.
Somehow, he can co-exist with regular Mario (of course, so can Young Link with Link...). Probably a throw in character due to time restraints during the creation process of SSBM.

Character history: Doc and Mario are the most similar of any two characters in the game, something that would inevitably create much debate on the effectiveness of Doctor Mario and his counterpart's abilities, distinguishing their games. This is also the number one clone that novice smashers want out due to the seeming complatency of the HAL development team. However, especially among higher level players, Doctor Mario is currently preferred over Mario, especially after Captain Jack showed up at TG6 and displayed his amazing Doc skills against Azen's Marth. He is increasingly being used in tournaments today, being picked up by players such as PC Chris. It has even been said in some circles that of all the characters in the game, Doctor Mario is one of the few characters who still has potential.

Character description: Well-balanced with a skew toward power
This is one of the characters that proves speed isn't everything. Doc's pills and power give him an edge over his alter-ego. Some of the moves are also altered from his more popular counterpart that give him an edge in his on-stage presence. Heavier, more powerful, this doctor has everything the plumber has but better (supposedly).
Although he is powerful and a little slower, that doesn't mean he doesn't have combo ability. His frames in his moves are still fast enough where he can pull of nasty combos, which is especially complimented with his pills. Reletively agile, he's neither a fast faller nor an extreme floater. His cape also has a long range and can turn people around. Although, don't get used to that range; some of his moves have very low range and must be used with care.
Also, contrary to popular belief, his movement is not what is actually slow about him. Watching "Clash of the Clones: Mario and Doctor Mario" easily reveals this. What is slower about him is his moves and how some of them are a bit slower on the draw.

Mastering Difficulty: Moderate
One of the biggest problems the doctor has is his range and this is something that will have to be overcome. Although timing on most of his moves aren't that big of an issue, there are a few things, that become problematic: jump pill pops, extended horizontal coin punch recovery, JC'd grab. His moves sometimes have strange workings (like his cape's hitbox and USmash on the ground). In fact, his stats generally don't lend him to be as straightforward as Mario is and is a little more difficult to figure out how to use well. His pills also aren't very straightforward and take time to master and some of his pillrush strategies can be tricky to pull off. Also, his recovery is harder to pull off than other character's. However, all this said, he isn't the most difficult character in the game to figure out. Avoidable screwups are not uncommon with this character but the player should get better with them with time.

Combo Ability: Great
Doctor Mario can move around the stage fast enough and his moves have the right influence on enemy trajectory, not to mention that his pills can help get into a combo as well as some other moves, like grabs and tilts (and on the occasional event, smashes). Oh yeah, did someone say wavedash?

Recoverablilty: Poor
Although he can recover, it's not really all that great. It's predictable, slow, and not to mention that there is reletively little payoff for so much work. The Jump Punch, however, does decent damage and knockback and has a hitbox slightly disjointed hitbox on the upper-front. It's also fast in the execution and harder to defend against. He has a few tactics from the ledge that'll help him such as fair, nair, uair and dair depending on the situation, as well as pills and ledgedash. However, one has to be careful of some of the lag in his moves. He's the only one who can B+Up cancel (although who knows how you're going to use it to help recover) and he can extend his horizontal distance with the jump punch (using complicated button procedures). His cape, while still able to suspend one in the air (and can deflect a potential disaster) is not as effective as Mario's and is a little dissapointing. Although not as hard to do as Luigi's Tornado recovery, Doc's tornado is hardly as effective as either Luigi's or Mario's when done at their max.

Kill Factor: Good
Doctor Mario, at least when compared to Mario, has more KO opportunities than Mario does. Although lacking a meteor, Doc makes up for it with his incredibly strong fair that can KO opponents under the 100% mark, depending on weight and position, sometimes killing much lower. Not only that, but his Fsmash is much much stronger, as well as many other moves. Edgeguarding wise, doc can quickly hop down for a bair and go to a ledgehog, as well as being able to use his longer cape to deter many potential recoveries, from Captain Falcon to Link to the space animals and whoever else. He also has a vertical wall of pain at the ledge and his ftilt works wonders on certain recoveries. The dangers of effective pill popping at the edge are also always prevalent. Although maybe not as useful as other's character's sex kick, it's in no way useless as an edgeguard tactic. Not to mention that his bthrow is extremely deadly and is comparable to Mewtwo's throws.

Key tactics:
Pill poppin' is a must. Learn how to use the pills effectively. The way the pills move makes them harder to dodge and they are hard to swallow when hit.
The cape pretty much has all of the uses of Mario's except it's longer and stronger. Use it to deflect moves, deflect opponents, or even recover.
B+Down isn't as effective at recovering at Mario but that doesn't mean you can't use it too.
Learn your moves and know when to use them. You are a powerhouse that can move decently fast but you have to know your limits, especially at how far you reach.
One of his moves that has changed from Mario is his forward air. Instead of a meteor, it is a KO attack so it is useful in most situations. If you're clever, you may even be able to combo, especially at low percentages. Not only that but a few other moves have been turned into better KO attacks, such as forward smash. Know your KO moves and use them.
Comboing. He's got enough for this to be a possiblity. In fact, going back to earlier in this post, it's a great possiblity.

Character Masters:
Bob Money - Bob Money is another DBR member and has created the wonderful video, Overdose. DBR being much about speed, Bob Money can make the Doctor glide like the wind.
Cyphus - He actually hung out with Bob Money to better his Doc. He is the author of a very extensive guide to Doc. He can also contort his body in very awkward positions.
Captain Jack - How can you go without mentioning this guy? Although his main is Sheik, he's no slacker with the man in garb and he can dish out some serious punishment. Of course, this is to be expected of the best in Japan.
Mike - One of the old school docs, he actually did a lot at older tournaments with the character. The reader, however, will have to do more research on his or her own on Mike due to the fact I haven't gotten much information on him, at least of his recent activities. ^_^;;
Various - Although nobody in this category is known for their Doctor Mario (except for Captain Jack), there are several pros, like PC Chris (and Captain Jack), who have good Doctor Marios. Occasionally, you will see these pros using him in tournaments.

Videos:
Overdose - by Bob Money
Single Vids: (DC++ Setup)
Eve (Fox) vs PC Chris (Dr Mario) 1
TG6-Captain Jack (Doctor Mario) vs. Mike (Doctor Mario)
CJ (DrMario) vs Azen (Marth) - Round 2.3
Mike (Doctor Mario) v.s. Andrew M. (Falco) - 01
S69-Masashi (Fox) vs. Captain Jack (Doctor Mario)

To learn more:
Not to be Taken Orally - by Cyphus is an excellent and very in depth guide about Doctor Mario, which even includes every matchup and stage preferences.
Another great guide is The man in garb - by Dr. Capsule. It provides a different viewpoint and can provide the reader with a greater variety of strats and views, although many things are repeated.
As with every other character, go to the character specific discussion for more information at smashboards.com. However, being a clone, he shares a board with Mario so not everything there may apply to the doctor.

Notes:
Doctor Mario is in the house! This was a lot of fun to do (and helpful) considering Doc is one of my main guys. There were some things that were clarified about him during this process and I got a bit better because of doing this.

Sorry this was late. I lost internet for the weekend and Midterms are coming up (four to be exact, two this week and two next week). In addition to that, I have a two-night orchestra concert event this weekend as well. In other words, don't expect to see the next character breakdown up later this week. I wouldn't even hold my breath for next week, considering the character I'm trying to do and the fact that I have two midterms next week plain .

Anyway, research was pretty easy, considering there are very extensive guides and such and some nice vids on the hub. The only real problem was trying to figure out who's who in the Doc community and the "character Masters" section may be incomplete. However, the ones I noted should suffice for starters.

As always, it was tough trying to put the character into categories but it should be a rough approximation at the very least.

Anyway, thanks for all your support so far. I love doing these and I hope these are helping newbies as well as other smashers.

Back to my week-long haitus from the IGN boards that was supposed to start 20 posts ago worried .

"Although he is powerful and a little slower..."

If memory serves me right, Mario and Doc both move at exactly the same speed and their attacks come out either at the same time or differ by a about couple frames, and Doc even moves through the air a bit faster.

Yeah, that's all I had to say >.>

Emunator: Lol tongue . It's so hard!

Thanks everyone happy . The next one is going to be Donkey Kong. Because of school and other stuff, it's probably going to be a while before we see that one though. Plus, Donkey Kong has always given me a lot of trouble. I don't know if it's just because he's hard to master or it's because he's so counter-intuitive as far as my intuition is concerned.

Again, thanks everyone happy .

Flyingthrough: I need to get back to practicing. After these midterms are over, I'm going to get back on learning that concerto I've been putting off.

Sylvester and Ultimate_Cartman: Sure, why don't we do that?
AOB recently reposted his "Donkey Kong video" in the works and he might actually finish it. Even though Donkey Kong's thing is in the works, I'll put it aside till later. Funny thing is, Fox was going to be the very last character O.O. I chose these at random. However, I've got a new idea.

Since these are going to be useful for you guys, I'm going to take requests from now on. I want to do Ice Climbers pretty soon (as a noobie silencer) but I may even have to put that off till later as well.

Someone earlier wanted Kirby and another guy wanted Roy. Cartman, you said Fox. Whoever gets the most requests I'll do next and I'll swap Donkey's place with that character's place in my queue. If no character has a majority, I'll go with whichever one is closest in my queue. So Sylvester, if you've got a character you want done, I'm takin' requests happy .

Roy: 1
Kirby: 1
Fox: 1

As I said, there probably won't be one this Saturday. I'll try for next Saturday but who knows how much free time I'll end up with. The week after at the latest.

Thanks again for all your support happy .

great job, Dr.Mario is one of my best characters

I usualy only use his pills as a distraction,
when I use the pill the opponent would
A-get hit wile I run, and grab him
B-use a shield (so then I would easily grab him)
C-Dodge the pill and get grabed
D-jump and get hit by Dr.Mario's upB

I also like his air-foward-A trick

great job you're doing
